Director's Notes

Prepare to be moved by Dance Floor Memoirs, a brand-new theatrical experience that will make you rethink what it means to dance. Set in the vibrant community of Truth Creek, the story kicks off with a flurry of excitement as everyone prepares for the biggest community dance the community has ever seen. But just as the disco balls are hung and the snacks are laid out, a shocking city-wide decree bans all public dancing, threatening to flatline the night before it even begins.

What happens next is far more than a simple protest. Inspired by their own unexpected "Footloose" moment, a group of friends embarks on a heartfelt and often humorous journey into the very essence of why we move. Through a series of intimate, personal stories, you'll witness moments like the pure joy of a child's first attempt at the robot, the heartfelt expression behind a daughter’s dance for her mother, and the quiet bravery of someone stepping onto the dance floor despite their fears.

Dance Floor Memoirs delves into the profound history of movement as a form of human expression and even resistance. From the suppression of cultural dances to the scandalous reception of the waltz, we explore how dance has always challenged norms and defied control. This play celebrates agency, powerfully highlighted by a character’s decree: "My Body, My Choice, Our Rights!"—a testament to the right to control one's own body and destiny. It’s a vivid exploration of expression, showing how dance fills the gaps when words fail us. And, most tenderly, it's about connection, revealing how shared movement can forge unbreakable bonds, from first steps taken with loved ones to cherished last dances with dear friends.

Ultimately, Dance Floor Memoirs reminds us that the true spirit of dance isn't found in a perfect routine or a packed hall, but in the irrepressible human need to move, to feel, and to connect. Even when silence is imposed, the beat finds a way to resonate. Come and experience this captivating story that will inspire you to find your own rhythm, celebrate your own unique moves, and remember that some dances can never truly be cancelled.

Joseph Au (Cast)
My name Joseph Au, I am 22 years old, and I love to perform. I fell in love with theater on a cruise ship and it is my dream to be a performer on a cruise ship one day. At Theater Terrific, I get to work on my skills and meet people with similar passions. My proudest achievement so far is the script and story I get to tell in this performance.
