Anyone can build sets in Theatre Terrific. This class will teach the foundations and principles of set design. Students will learn how to interpret a show through a visual language and learn the steps of creating a world by script base analysis. By the end of this course, students will be able to explore their own creative impulses to theatre and apply design tools in order to create a visual landscape in which to explore their stories. Students will have the ability to create their own worlds as well as collaborate in making a devised design. This class is about discussion, exploration, and collaboration.
Instructor: Emily Dotson is a set designer and theatre educator in Vancouver. She has worked as an assistant set and costume designer for both The Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival and assistant set designer with Bard on the beach. She is an Adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia specializing in set design and scenic painting. She is a Jesse Award winner and an Ovation Award nominee. Recent shows include Ms Holmes and Miss Watson Apt. 2B at the Gateway Theater, Amadeus at the Stratford Festival director's projects,and 9-5 the Musical with RCMT. Upcoming designs can be seen at Douglas College with Concord Floral, at Jericho Arts Center with Network, and RCMT with Shrek The Musical.
