Director's Notes

We are well past the futuristic vision Orwell imagined in 1984. Today, we live in an era defined by constant surveillance, deepfakes, and deep social and political polarization. Isolation has become second nature, exacerbated by algorithmic feeds that distract us from rigorous truth and investigative fact-finding. This environment creates a breeding ground for radical extremism, paving the way for authoritarian regimes to dismantle what was once a shining beacon of democracy.

Orwell wrote 1984 in his final years not merely as dystopian science fiction for entertainment, but—as evidenced by the novel’s appendix—as a vital warning. It serves as a urgent call to action, forcing us to recognize humanity’s possible paths: one defined by an authoritarian, algorithmically surveilled state, and another where people unite to fight for liberty, truth, and love.

This production marks Theatre Terrific's 40th year participating in the Vancouver Fringe Festival. As Canada's longest-running mixed-abilities theatre company, it is our great honor to present this adaptation of Orwell's classic work.

About the team:

A transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area, Regielyn has a penchant for felines, cheese, and using song lyrics in everyday conversations. They would like to thank their partner Mike for his endless support.
