The Bread Project
PURPOSE
To bring together a diverse group of social organizations and performance companies to participate in the creation of a three day celebratory theatrical event constructed around the community sharing of the staff of life.....bread, in all it's diverse forms.
IDEA
Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods known to humankind. It uses the basic ingredients of ground grain and water. Most, if not all cultures, nationalities, and races have a form of bread that speaks to their earliest childhood memories. The act of sharing a basic food, such as breaking bread together is a symbol of community connection and the common human experience of replenishing our bodies. This can be done in times of celebration and festivities, in times of starvation and crisis, to plan, to state opinion, and to discuss decisions that will affect everyone participating in the feast. Most of all, ‘breaking bread’ is done in community- to connect with each other.
WHY DO THIS?
- To open doors, alter misconceptions, extend a hand, become familiar with the unfamiliar, erase fears, share ideas, expand horizons and to connect with each other
- To broaden the scope of participating communities through the experience of creating and developing work as a diverse ensemble, contributing to something larger than the self.
- To cross-pollinate the ideas and practices of various organizations and people, in order to recognize and take advantage of similarities and constructive differences.
- To share, connect and create with those who would normally never have the opportunity to develop creative work together.
- To experience the possibilities and benefits of theatre as a socially engaging and interactive community experience.
-
To honour participants as ambassadors of a collaborative process striving to enhance understanding and connection between different communities.
